Willmar teams play at Mankato in semis today

WILLMAR -- It's "Mankato or Bust" for both Willmar Cardinal soccer teams today in their quest for a state tournament berth.

Each faces the Mankato West Scarlets in Section 2A semifinal matches.

The No. 3-seed Willmar boys (13-5-1) play No. 2 West (17-2).

The No. 6-seeded Cardinal girls (9-9-1) play a Scarlet team (10-6-2) that is also No. 2 in the 15-team section.

Both matches are scheduled for 4 p.m. at the Dakota Meadows Middle School Fields #1 (girls) and #2 (boys).

In each case, the rivals will be meeting for the first time this fall.

The Willmar boys are defending section champion. The winner today will play the winner of No. 1 Mankato East vs. No. 4 Worthington on Thursday, at the higher seed.

The Willmar girls are coming off a 3-2 upset Saturday over No. 3 New Ulm. In the opposite bracket, defending champion and No. 1-seed Albert Lea is hosting No. 5 Mankato East. The championship match is slated for Friday.

A year ago, Willmar upset Mankato West 1-0 in this same round before falling at Albert Lea, 2-1.
