Girls Hockey: Willmar extends win streak to 4

PAYNESVILLE -- Becca Freese scored both of her goals in the first period to get Willmar off to a fast start on the way to clipping the River Lakes Stars 6-2 on Tuesday in Central Lakes Conference girls hockey.

Down 2-0, the Stars rallied for the tie on goals by Kelsey Athmann and Jenn Paul, just 34 seconds apart six minutes into the middle frame.

But goalie Baylie Young and the Cardinal defense shut the door after that. Kylee Hulscher's goal at 14:40 made it 3-2 through two.

Willmar (2-1, 4-2), which won its fourth straight, pulled away in the third on goals by Kenzie Dahl, Kayte Cole and Jennie Mattison.

Ali Sing assisted on each of Willmar's final four goals.

"We played very good hockey," said Willmar coach Chad Akerson. "The defense is our strong point right now."

The Stars (0-2-1, 2-3-1) were outshot 31-24.
