Girls Hockey: Willmar blanked by New Prague, 2-0
AUSTIN -- The Willmar girls hockey team outshot New Prague, but couldn't get any of those attempts past goalie Shyler Sletta in a 2-0 loss in the semifinals of the Austin Invite Tuesday.
The Cardinals (8-5) peppered 31 shots on goal, while New Prague had 16. Willmar faces Minneapolis Novas for third place at 12:30 p.m. today.
"We had some good opportunities in the game, but we ran into a hot goalie," said Willmar coach Chad Akerson.
Willmar kept the New Prague scoring chances low through the first period, then Shannon Meyer broke the drought at 15:58. New Prague would add a second goal in the third period from Nicole Prokes.
"Overall, that was the best three consecutive periods we played," Akerson said. "We made some big strides in the game."
Willmar goalie Baylie Young had 14 saves.
Cards' Freese wins shootout competition
Willmar sophomore forward Becca Freese won a shootout competition at the Austin Invite Tuesday that featured 40 players.
Each program in the eight-team field had five players participate in the shootout and after the final round, Freese was one of eight players that had three goals in eight attempts. Freese then won the award after being the only player to score in sudden death.
