Girls Hockey: Northfield nips Willmar in third-place game, 2-1
AUSTIN -- The Willmar girls hockey team took a 1-0 lead into the third period of their third-place game of the Austin Invite Wednesday, but Northfield scored twice to win.
The Cardinals (8-6) took a 1-0 lead on Jennie Mattison's goal in the first period. Sam Block picked up the assist.
Both goalies kept the score the same in the second period, but Northfield got two shots past Willmar's Baylie Young in the third. Riley Seitz scored one goal and Hannah Pilger had the other.
"We played very well for two periods. We didn't have a lot of good scoring chances, but there were enough to score more than one goal," said Willmar coach Chad Akerson.
Young finished the game with 29 saves.
New Prague won the championship over Minnesota Novas 4-3 in overtime.
Erin Sheehan and Becca Freese were named to the all-tournament team.
The Cardinals' first action in 2010 will be at Sartell/Sauk Rapids in a Central Lakes Conference game on Tuesday.
