Boys Hockey: Willmar steamrolls Becker/BL in final

PAYNESVILLE -- Gabe Amon pocketed four goals and Grant Schow and Liam Johnston added two more apiece as Willmar won its fourth straight by blanking Becker/Big Lake 11-0 in the championship game of the River Lakes Invite Wednesday.

The Cardinals (7-1) were credited with getting 21 shots on goal in the first period and Becker/Big Lake goalie Alex Darsow didn't allow anything through. But the floodgates opened in the second period as the Cardinals erupted for eight goals.

"We got a couple of goals right away and relaxed," said Willmar coach Dan Tollefson. "Things then starting clicking."

Amon netted a hat trick in the second period while Schow, Grant Kallevig, Johnston, Jake Tone and Cameron Swenson also scored in the period.

Amon, Johnston and Schow then scored again in the third period.

Johnston, Schow, Tone, Paul Schrupp and Landon Peterson all had two assists as the Cardinals outshot Becker/Big Lake 63-16. Ben Leitch pitched the shutout and the senior goalie also assisted on the last goal of the game.

Willmar returns to action Tuesday when it hosts Sartell in a Central Lakes Conference game.
