Willmar faces Alexandria in semis today

ALEXANDRIA -- The Willmar boys hockey team is looking for their second upset in the Section 6A playoffs at 3 p.m. today when they meet top-seeded Alexandria at the Runestone Arena in the semifinal round.

Alexandria (18-6-1), which is rated No. 7 in Class A by Let's Play Hockey, has won 12 of 13 since a 5-4 loss at Brainerd Jan. 14. The hot streak includes a 5-2 home-ice win over Willmar, the only 6A team to beat them, 3-1 on Dec. 15.

Alexandria beat St. Cloud Apollo 9-1 on Tuesday. No. 5 Willmar (15-10) nipped Detroit Lakes 4-3 in overtime.

Alexandria's leading scorers are Tom Williams (34 goals, 23 assists, 57 points), Casey Vangsness (15-31-46) and Ross Thompson (11-29-40).

Willmar counters with Liam Johnston (24-13-37), Grant Schow (19-13-32), Gabe Amon (18-11-29), Paul Schrupp (6-14-20) and Jake Tone (1-18-19).

Willmar goalies Ben Leitch (90.3 save percentage) and Keifer Dahle (90.9 percent) have three shutouts each.
