Boys Tennis: Willmar edged by Scarlets

WILLMAR -- Mankato West broke a 3-3 tie by winning 1-doubles in three sets as the Scarlets edged Willmar 4-3 in a non-conference dual Monday.

After collecting straight-set wins at 2-doubles (Marty Larson and David Skonard), 3-doubles (Sam Murphy and Austen Hilding) and 4-singles (Jimmy Unger) Willmar tied the match at 3-3.

Landon Peterson and Shane Christensen grab-bed the first set 7-5 at 1-doubles for Willmar, but the Mankato West duo of Brian Kurtz and Jacob Olson then won 6-3, 6-3 to claim the fourth and deciding point for the Scarlets.

The three singles wins for the visiting Scarlets all came in straight sets against the Cardinals.

Willmar is now 2-3 overall.

Mankato West improved to 1-1 on the season with the win.

Weather permitting, Willmar will travel to St. Cloud today to meet St. Cloud Apollo for a Central Lakes Conference dual starting at 4:30 p.m.
