Prep Baseball: Sauk Rapids trips up Willmar in CLC battle
WILLMAR -- In an efficient performance, Sauk Rapids pitcher Nick Mauren checked Willmar on three hits and didn't walk a batter as the Sabres handed Willmar a 4-1 loss in Central Lakes Conference baseball on Friday.
All three hits went for doubles. Jason Gunvalson's two-out, two-bagger in the third chased home Ryan Horning, who had reached on an error, for the Cardinals' only run.
Willmar sank to 1-7 in the CLC and 1-11 overall. The Storm improved to 6-3 in the CLC and 10-3 overall.
Willmar is scheduled to play a makeup with Brainerd at 1 p.m. at Bill Taunton Stadium today.
Ryan Lawler was injured while trying to lay down a bunt. The ball popped off the bat striking him in the face.
Willmar coach Mark Stier said that the senior left fielder's nose was broken and that he was sent to the hospital.
Jake Damhof and Nathanial Swoyer had the other hits for Willmar.
"We hit some balls hard, but they held up in the north wind," said Stier.
Swoyer scattered seven hits in absorbing the loss. He walked two and fanned five over seven innings.
