Willmar rolls past GLS in opener

Baylie Young uncorks a hard shot from the right wing; The Willmar senior forward later scored the Cardinals' first goal of the season, but from the left side, at the Kennedy pitch on Thursday.

WILLMAR -- From the start, the Willmar Cardinals girls soccer team pinned the ball in the Glencoe-Silver Lake defensive half Thursday. Numerous rushes were stopped until Willmar senior Baylie Young connected on a rush down the left wing in the 24th minute to start a successful season opener as the Cardinals overwhelmed the Panthers 7-1 in a non-conference match.

Senior Courtney Jacobson soon followed with a 30-yard lift that skidded off the crossbar and skidded into the interior side of the net, giving Willmar a 2-0 lead in a span of three minutes. Young struck again to give Willmar a 3-0 lead at halftime.

"Everything clicked and fell into place (after a slow start)," said Willmar coach Chelsea Brown. "We won with our passing and communication."

The Panthers, who played with out a bench requiring all 10 position players to play all 80 minutes on a hot day in full sun, scored six minutes into the second half, but Willmar responded with three goals from Jacobson and another from Young. The last three goals were notched in the final four minutes of play.

"Courtney had a lot of beautiful cross shots and shoots very well from the outside and Baylie is our breakaway girl," said Brown. "The also defense played very solid tonight. They felt comfortable staying up."

Willmar sophomore goalie Jordan Martins faced just three shots while her teammates were able to fire off 28 shots against the young Panthers. Picking up assists for Willmar were Raegan Erickson, Rachel Hardy and Shelby Schneider.

The Cardinals host Mankato East at 1 p.m. Saturday at Kennedy Field.
