SARTELL -- Xiaodan Yu is returning to the state tournament, but this time in Minnesota not Oregon.

The Willmar Cardinal senior won three matches on Saturday to capture the Section 8AA Singles Championship during the individual tournament at Gold's Gym between St. Cloud and Sartell.

Yu, who moved to Willmar with her parents in mid-September 2010, did not play tennis last fall. She won an Oregon state title as a sophomore after placing state runner-up as a freshman in the middle of Oregon's high school league's three division scheme for tennis.

Yu will take a 19-4 record to the Class AA individual state tournament scheduled for Oct. 27-28 at the Baseline Tennis Center on the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis.

On Saturday, Yu, the South sub-section No. 1 seed defeated North No. 4 Briana Radeacher of Brainerd 6-1, 6-1; South No. 3 seed Taylor Tarrolly of St. Cloud Tech 1-6, 6-2, 6-1; and finally for the championship, North No. 1 Lindsey Kimball of Fergus Falls 6-3, 6-3.

Yu was born in China but grew up in Kansas and Corvallis, Oregon.
