Prep baseball: Otters dump fumbling Cards

WILLMAR -- Fergus Falls outfielded and outhit Willmar to take a 6-2 win at Baker Field in Central Lakes Conference baseball on Thursday.

The first of three Willmar errors led to two unearned runs in the top of the first.

Another unearned run scored in the Otters' 3-run sixth, also an infield miscue.

Willmar got two of its three hits in their first at bat when Dean Stier singled and Jason Gunvalson followed with a double. Patrick Courtney's second inning single off Tim Rasmussen was the Cardinals last. Rasmussen went all seven on 1 walk, 2 hit batters and 5 strikeouts.

The Otters got only 5 hits off Stier, who went the first five and Brandon Christenson who finished up. But one of those was a double by Pete Gaustad leading off the fifth and then a two-run triple in the next inning. He scored half his team's 6 runs.

"We had better at bats today," said head coach Mark Stier. "We weren't hitting so many fly balls which we call easy outs."

Willmar fell to 2-4 in the CLC and 3-6 overall. The Cardinals travel to Chanhassen on Monday.
