Girls hockey: Cardinals win 3rd straight
WILLMAR -- Madison Sandberg turned back 22 of 23 shots and Shelby Schneider collected three points behind two goals to help Willmar win its third straight game as the Cardinals upended Hutchinson 6-1 Tuesday in a non-conference contest.
Willmar (4-1) outshot its Section 2A rival 36-23, including firing off 17 shots in the opening period in which it got goals from Riley Schneider and Miranda Roelofs.
Hutchinson struck first, 2:47 into the game, but Sandberg shut out the Tigers (1-2) for the remainder of the game. Sandberg has allowed just six goals in the Cardinals' four wins.
Willmar then sounded the horn three more times in the second period and once more in the third period. Amelia Amon and Annie Johnston scored in the second, while Shelby Schneider capped the scoring with her fourth and fifth goals on the young season.
Samantha Block and Brittney Serbus added two assists each.
Willmar resumes play on Thursday when it hosts Sartell/Sauk Rapids in a Central Lakes Conference game that is scheduled to start at 7 p.m.
