Girls Basketball: Willmar falls to Grand Rapids

ST. PAUL—Grand Rapids defeated Willmar 72-58 in a Class AAA consolation semifinal game during the Minnesota State Girls Basketball Tournament on Thursday at Concordia-St. Paul.

The Cardinals finished their 2016-17 season with a 20-11 record.

Grand Rapids took the lead in the game early, up 10-6, within the first three minutes of the game and built the lead to 14 points.

But the Cardinals ramped up defensive pressure and cut the Thunderhawks' lead to just 32-31 at halftime.

But Grand Rapids heated back up in the second half. Giana Roberts hit four 3-point shots in the first eight minutes of the half and the Thunderhawks were in control from that point on.

Heaven Hamling led Grand Rapids with 21 points and Roberts scored 20. Meara Beighley finished with 13 points and 11 rebounds.

Willmar's Cayle Hovland scored a team-high 15 points, Heidi Sellmann scored 13 and Grace Sawyer came through with 11.

Kayla Rudie finished with eight points and four steals, Hovland had a team-high eight rebounds and Sellmann and Carly Wedel both had six rebounds.

The Thunderhawks shot 44.6 percent from the field and limited Willmar to 28.1 percent shooting.

Grand Rapids also hit 10 of 16 3-point shots and also made 12 of 15 foul shots.

The Cardinals did make 22 of 28 free throws but were just 4 of 13 on 3s.
