WILLMAR - So far, so good for the Willmar boys soccer team in Central Lakes Conference play.

Four different players found the back of the net for the Cardinals en route to a 4-0 win over Rocori on Tuesday at Hodapp Field in their conference opener.

Willmar dominated play from the opening whistle, but Rocori remained just one well-struck ball or lucky bounce away from tying the game throughout most of the second half.

A splendid header by Vicente Cisneros on a cross from Gerson Maldonado-Garcia scooted past frozen Spartans goalkeeper Caiden Hennen in the 65th minute to give Willmar a two-goal lead.

"Vicente got to a good spot and then had a really nice finish to make things a little easier," Cardinals head coach Jeff Winter said.

Maldonado-Garcia then tallied a goal of his own just three minutes later to effectively put the game away, and Kelvin Gomez-Padilla scored in the 70th minute to put the Cardinals up 4-0.

While Rocori was able to keep the game competitive until the final stretch of play, it was never able to put together a threatening attack against the Willmar defense.

Cardinals goalkeeper Zach Courtney posted a clean sheet, stopping all four of the Spartans' shots on goal. Willmar, meanwhile, put 16 shots on target.

"We did a good job of controlling the midfield today," Winter said.

Abdinasir Hassan broke a scoreless tie just before the end of the first half in the 39th minute, hammering home a loose ball in the six-yard box following a Cisneros header.

Cisneros also recorded an assist on Gomez-Padilla's goal to record two assists on the afternoon.

The Cardinals rebounded from a tough loss on Monday at Mound Westonka to improve to 2-2 on the season. Their next game comes on Thursday night at Brainerd.
