Boys hockey roundup: Apollo slips by Cards

ST. CLOUD — The Willmar Cardinals lost a second heartbreaker in three days falling to St. Cloud Apollo at the MAC 2-1 on Thursday.

The Cardinals, who lost 6-5 to Brainerd on Tuesday, led the Eagles after one period on a goal by Josh Tinklenberg. The sophomore wing got help from Buzzy Tollefson and Hunter Magnuson, at 10:05.

The Eagles (8-3, 13-9) answered in the second period. Brandon Bissett, a freshman forward, tied it with 2:17 elapsed and then senior defenseman Brandon Block put the Eagles up, 2-1, a little more than two minutes later at 4:42, a power-play goal.

Willmar was getting out shot but goalie Joey Benson kept Willmar fresh on the scent.

He finished with 28 saves on 30 shots. Willmar put 15 shots on his counterpart, Nick Althaus, only three in the third period when neither team showed a lot of offense.

Apollo won the first meeting 6-2.

Willmar plays another Section 4A foe tonight at Sauk Centre vs. Prairie Center.

Sartell picked up its 10th win of the season as Elliott Brookins needed to make just 16 saves in the Sabres’ 3-0 win over Central Lakes Conference rival River Lakes on Thursday.

The Sabres (5-6-2, 10-7-4) outshot River Lakes 33-16 and scored all of their goals in the first half of the game. The Stars (4-9, 9-13) managed to fire off just one shot in a scoreless third period.

Spencer Zwiener scored midway through the first period before Ryan Tveit and Kyle Erickson netted goals 5½ minutes apart early in the second period.
