Prep baseball: Cards pick up 1st win

WILLMAR — The Cardinals ended their 6-game losing streak to start the season beating the Sartell Sabres 5-3 in the first game of a Central Lakes double header at Baker Field on Thursday.

Starter Tyler Stegeman got the win and Josh Warned knocked in two runs with a double in Willmar’s three-run second inning.

The Sabres took game two 4-1 in a cold wind under full overcast.

The Cardinals (1-6, 1-7) are back at Taunton Stadium today facing St. Cloud Apollo with first pitch at 5 p.m.

Game One

Willmar 5, Sartell 3

Stegeman survived a four-walk first inning that coupled with a Dylan Hollenkamp double produced two runs.

He went the first five allowing five hits. He twice got out of jams with a strikeout and once with a double-play, shortstop Austin Smith to Josh Warne to Austin Rambow.

Stegeman and Josh Warne had RBI hits. Another key, Willmar played errorless ball for the first time.

Michael Kutz, who finished up in game one, checked the Cardinals on five hits through five innings and Parker Hagen threw two clean innings of relief.

Adam Nibaur took the loss. Josh Warne and Cooper Scott also threw.

Four errors didn’t help.

Shortstop Austin Smith, elevated from the jayvee, supplied a single in each game.
