College Football: Bethel belts Wartburg to reach D-III quarters

With Erik Peterson, the MIAC offensive player of the year on the bench with a shoulder injury, senior backup Tom Keefe took over at quarterback to lead the Bethel Royals (12-0) to a 34-27 win over Wartburg College in the second round of the NCAA Division III football playoffs.

Keefe, a senior who has never started, finished 9 of 12 for 148 yards and two TDs, including the game-winner to Brandon Marquardt with 1:53 left in the game.

The Royals will host North Central College in the quarterfinals at noon Saturday in Arden Hills.

Elsewhere on Saturday, behind four touchdown passes by Phillip Klaphake, No. 6 St. Cloud State upset No. 2 seed Minnesota State in Mankato 54-48 in the D-II playoffs. The Huskies play at No. 1 seed Northwest Missouri State, which scrubbed Minnesota-Duluth 45-21, on Saturday at noon.
