College Wrestling: Peterson wins title at Ridgewater Open

WILLMAR — Zane Petersen won at heavyweight and Matt Meyer placed runner-up at 149-pounds at the Ridgewater College Wrestling Open on Saturday.

Petersen, a sophomore from rural Lakeville, decisioned Trae Story of St. Cloud State 8-2, pinned Jerrad Nieland of North Dakota State in 59 seconds and majored Luke Belich of St. Cloud State 8-3.

Petersen was a state champion (AAA) for Lake ville South at 215 pounds in 2011. In 2012, Zane’s younger brother Tommy won the 215-pound title beating Story, from Roseville Area, in the championship match. On Saturday, Tommy, a two-time state champion now at North Dakota State, went 3-0 to win the 197-pound weight class.

Other than his loss to Petersen, Story went 4-0.

Meyer is a freshman out of Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City who attended Central Lakes College his first year out of high school but did not wrestle, reached the final with two wins before losing narrowly to Taner Trembley of St. Cloud State University 6-5.

Adam Sutlief at 133 lost his first match but then won his next three, each via a pin.

A total of 12 colleges and university entered 71 wrestlers.
