Ridgewater 2 TD comeback gets first win in home opener at Willmar, Minn
WILLMAR, Minn -- Elijah Swen's line-drive field goal from 32 yards completed a Ridgewater College comeback giving the Warriors a win in their home-town debut on a sunny and comfortable Saturday afternoon at Hodapp Field.
The Warriors trailed defending MCAC Northern Division champion Mesabi Range of Virginia 14-0 after one quarter but tightened up the defense to win 17-14.
Both teams are 1-1. Swen's field goal came with 6:52 on the fourth-quarter clock. The Warriors' defense set up the score when a Mesabi punt was deflected and picked up by defensive back Daryl Thomas and run to the 20.
Davontay Stevens scored from 10 yards for a 14-7 score at half. Nathanial Swoyer's two-yard run and Swen's boot tied it 14-14 in the third quarter. That followed a short TD drive set up when defensive end Johnnie Miller sacked Norsemen quarterback Demarco Billups on fourth down.
Cody Jaeger's long punt put Mesabi 65 yards away from the Warriors end zone with a minute to play. The drive died on downs at the Willmar 35 with seconds left.
