WILLMAR -- The Ridgewater men's basketball team had a brief lapse in the first half and it proved costly at the end of the Warriors' 66-58 season-opening loss to Quakerdale Promise Academy Friday night.

The Warriors and Eagles were playing fairly even until Quakerdale began applying full-court pressure. Ridgewater didn't handle it well, turning the ball over and rarely finding good looks once the Warriors did establish its half-court offense.

The Eagles shot ahead by 12 points at one point late in the half.

"That was the whole game, right there," said Warriors head coach Bob Knutson. "We turned the ball over too much. We were within five points at one time in the second half and then we turned the ball over two times in a row. We shot well and played good defense, it was the turnovers that got us."

Ridgewater committed 19 turnovers to Quakerdale's 10. The Eagles also won the rebounding battle 37-29.

But while the Warriors shot 40 percent from the field shots, they made 9 of 18 3-point shots.

Tyler Pendleton led the Warriors with 17 points and D.J. Schrupp finished with 10 points and a 4 rebounds.

Spencer Nelson and Cody Warner both scored 6 points and Warner had a team-high 5 rebounds.

Frederick Young scored 14 points and Zack Lofton had 12 for the Eagles, who also got 9 points and 8 rebounds from John Savoy.

The Warriors play next on Tuesday at home against the St. John's University junior varsity.
