Local Roundup: Willmar Legion shuts down Morris

WILLMAR - Matt Flaig worked six strong innings and Willmar Post 167 downed Morris 5-1 on Saturday afternoon at Taunton Stadium.

Flaig allowed a run on five hits and struck out six. Brandon Elseth worked a clean seventh, striking out one.

Post 167's Tyler Johnson singled and drove in two runs, Noah Vreeman had two hits, Jack Baumgart had two hits, including a double, and Noah Streed had a double in three trips.

Chase Metzger, Toby Sayles, Parker Dierks, Brock Anderson and Chandler Vogel had Morris' hits.

Willmar plays host to Benson at 7 p.m. today at Taunton Stadium.

West St. Paul exploded in the first two innings and went on to defeat Sacred Heart/MACCRAY on Saturday in Sacred Heart.

SH/M's Braden Hoekstra had two hits and drove in a run, and Brett Harguth and Spencer Wohlman also had a pair of hits.

Willmar 8, Mankato 2

The Willmar Stingers put together a solid all-around game and Danny Rodriguez had a night to remember as the Stingers took down Mankato on Sunday in Mankato.

Rodriguez hit a home run, doubled twice, drove in three runs and scored three as the Stingers had seven extra base hits among their 11 hits off MoonDogs pitching.

Four Stingers pitchers shut down Mankato's offense, with Jake Rothwell getting the win working 5-2/3 innings. Connor Jahn, Braxton Johns and Alex Reyes allowed a hit and a run in 3-1/3 innings of relief.

The Stingers and Mankato were tied 2-2 in the bottom of the seventh inning in their Saturday game when it was suspended because of rain. The game will be resumed when the MoonDogs are in Willmar on June 25.

The Stingers open a two-game set at Rochester at 7:05 p.m. today.

Hutchinson's Jake Wentland hit a two-run home run to break a tie in the eighth inning and leading Hutchinson to the win over Raymond on Sunday in the Elrosa Tournament.

Raymond's Tyler Steen hit a grand slam in the second inning and John Sawatzky hit a solo shot in the seventh to force the extra frame.

Raymond play host to Granite Falls at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in Raymond, then takes on Sobieski at 10 a.m. Saturday in the Town Ball Classic at Target Field.

Delano scored the go-ahead run in the top of the seventh on a squeeze bunt as the Rockets fell on Saturday in the Elrosa Tournament to a team they defeated on their way to winning the Class C state championship last year.

Hunter Hart put Delano up 3-0 with a three-run homer in the first.
