Cardinals open with a bang

FERGUS FALLS — In the last three matchups with Fergus Falls, all wins for Willmar, the biggest margin of victory was 14 points.

The Cardinals dwarfed that by halftime.

Up 41-6 through two quarters, Willmar opened the 2018 season with resounding success with a 51-6 drubbing of the Otters.

Drey Dirksen was nearly impossible to stop both in the air and on the ground. The senior signal-caller opened the game with a 24-yard touchdown run before scoring with two 6-yard scoring scampers before halftime. He finished with 84 rushing yards on 10 carries. Dirksen also was 9 of 13 passing for 144 yards, including a 42-yard touchdown to Zach Morrell and a 7-yard scoring connection with Ryan Slette in the second quarter.

With Willmar up 6-0 in the first quarter, Jake Evans swung the momentum fully in the Cardinals' favor with an 89-yard interception return for a score.

On the ground, Willmar had a sizable advantage over Fergus Falls, out-gaining the host Otters 293-141.

Next Friday, the Cardinals will play host to Hutchinson for the home opener. The Tigers opened the year with a 22-21 win at Monticello on Thursday.
