Local golf clubs beginning to open
Cabin fever ended for a lucky number of golfers Tuesday and Wednesday as a number of area courses opened up for the season.
Benson Golf Club opened Wednesday to traffic both walking and carts, except for holes 4 and 5 on the other side of the Chippewa River, which are still wet, but can be played by walking.
"Sally Berens (the course superintendent) just looks at when the frost is out and the water is gone (to determine when to open the course)," said Will Orr, the Benson Golf Course manager. "Also the firmness to get carts out there. With the sun and wind, and hopefully a little warmth, we'll be able to get those other two holes open to more than walking."
Orr also said people get a little antsy once the snow melts and want to hit the links.
"We got a little pressure, but there are about 25 people out there today, and they said the course looks good," he said. "But there are a couple holes that are still a little wet and are just for walking."
Valley Golf Course in Willmar also let golfers roam the nine-hole course Wednesday for the first time and allowed them to use carts.
Appleton Golf Club opened Tuesday to all comers and Granite Run Golf Club in Granite Falls had someone out on the course Tuesday and was open for full action Wednesday. The club will host a high school dual golf meet between Yellow Medicine East and Dawson-Boyd today.
Opening today are Hawk Creek Country Club in Raymond, Litchfield Golf Club and The Crossings in Montevideo.
Eagle Creek Golf Club pro Joel Jacobson said his course was still a little wet as of Wednesday, but that the course would open Saturday with the use of carts a possibility.
