Conservation Calendar


WCER Fishing Camp -- Willmar Community Education and Recreation, along with MinnAqua, will host a fishing camp for youth in grades 1-4 Wednesday, June 17, from 10:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. at Robbins Island in Willmar. Participants will learn about fish and their environment, and will make their own fishing pole using a pop can. Each child will receive a starter tackle box and activity book. Bring a brown bag lunch and dress for the weather. The camp fee is $10 per student. Pre-registration is required. For more information, call WCER at 320-231-8490.

M1 Garand Shoot -- The Willmar Rifle/Pistol Club will hold its annual M1 Garand shoots on July 7 and Aug. 4 at 6:30 p.m. at the Eagle Lake Rifle Range. In the case of inclement weather, the matches will be held the next Tuesday. The cost is $10 for non-members and $8 for members. All rifles, ammunition, targets and instruction will be furnished by the range safety personnel.

Sibley State Park

The Interpretive Center is open daily. All Sibley State park programs are lead by the park naturalist or visiting expert. They are at the Interpretive Center and are free unless otherwise noted. A vehicle permit is required to enter the park and they are available at the park office. For more information call 354-2002.

Songs of the Forest: 9 a.m. June 13. The naturalist will lead a walk to various habitats to identify different bird songs and discuss the reasons for singing.

Mt. Tom trail hike: 10:30 a.m. June 13. Hike with a naturalist along part of the Mt. Tom trail to two of the parks scenic vistas, Little Mt. Tom and Badger Hill. Meet at the Mt. Tom parking lot to start the two-mile hike.

Butterflies, Winged Wildflowers: 2 p.m. June 13. Explore one of nature's most beautiful and graceful creatures while observing some of the more than 54 different butterflies in Sibley.

Dragons in the air: 11 a.m. June 14. Sibley is home to over 20 different dragonflies. Following a PowerPoint presentation on these insects with the amphibian-like lifestyle, we'll go hunting for dragons!
