VFW Baseball: Starbuck trips up Willmar I
WILLMAR — Austin Versteeg banged out three hits — two being triples — to knock in four runs and Starbuck used a five-run seventh inning to break open a close game, resulting in a 9-3 win for the visitors in a VFW baseball game against Willmar I Tuesday.
Both teams scored twice in the first inning, but Willmar was held scoreless for the next four innings while Starbuck produced a run in both the second and third to stay in front.
Ryder Lynk started a 10 at-bat seventh for Starbuck with a single and Versteeg’s bases-clearing triple that brought in Michael Gruber, Jon Nygaard and Riley Thompson highlighted the frame.
Thompson, who was 2-for-4 at the plate and had an RBI single in the seventh, worked into the seventh while on the mound to earn the win, scattering 10 hits, three earned runs and four strikeouts.
Zach Horman, Brett Swanson and Cole Christensen had two hits each for Willmar. Swanson and Nate Ackerman had RBI singles while Josh Tinklenberg added a sacrifice fly.
