Legion Baseball: Morris, BOLD win to open District 7 Final Four

MONTEVIDEO — Bryce Jergenson tossed a three-hit shutout and Chandler Erickson provided three run-scoring hits Tuesday to propel Morris past Madison 7-0 in the first game of the Division II, District 7 Final Four Tournament in Legion baseball playoff action.

Only one player was able to get a hit off Jergenson as Preston Kraft singled in the first, third and sixth innings for Madison. Jergenson only issued two walks while striking out six to help Morris improve to 17-2.

Morris now plays BOLD in the winner’s bracket final on Thursday at 7:45 p.m. in Montevideo, this year’s host of the Final Four. Madison drops into the elimination bracket and will play Thursday at 5:15 p.m. against Osakis.

Erickson singled in a run in the second and fifth before driving in another run with a double in Morris’ four-run sixth. Also highlighting the sixth was Tyler Henrichs’ two-run double and Andrew Rentz scoring on Logan Manska’s groundout after he tripled to lead off the frame.

Tanner Picht, who also had three hits, put Morris up 2-0 in the third by slugging an RBI double. Mac Beyer added a triple and single to help Morris outhit Madison 10-3.

The game was a rematch of many players who faced off in the Class A state championship game this spring.

Sandgren walked seven but allowed just four hits and struck out 10. As he did in the state title game, Sandgren outdueled Osakis’ Jordan Frederick, who took the loss despite striking out 13.

Sandgren threw a one-hitter to beat Frederick and Osakis 3-0 in the state championship game in June.

On Tuesday, BOLD’s Lane Stadther was 3-for-4 and drove in a run and Tyler Seehusen and Sandgren both had two hits.

Austin Weis tripled in two runs in a four-run seventh inning, Sawyer Tersteeg singled and drove in a run and Trevor Nissen also singled.

BOLD plays next against Morris, a 7-0 winner over Madison in Tuesday’s first game, at 7:45 p.m. Thursday in Montevideo.
