Prep football: Falcons power past Warriors

GROVE CITY — In a West Central Conference rumble to launch the season, Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City rolled over BOLD 41-16 on Friday.

Big plays made the difference, with the Falcons scoring on a 64-yard blocked field goal return and an 86-yard pass play, with David Kinzler on the money end of both plays.

BOLD did itself no favors by fumbling six times and losing five of them.

It was a stunning turnabout from last season’s opening game in Olivia, in which the Warriors overwhelmed ACGC 30-0.

Both teams ended up getting as far as the Minnesota State Tournament semifinals before suffering narrow loses, ACGC in Class A and BOLD in Class AA.

BOLD let Friday’s game slip away early.

The Warriors coughed the ball up four times in the first quarter — each time inside their own 30 — and twice the Falcons converted the gifts into touchdowns.

Alex Pankratz carved right end for a 5-yard score and Maverick Whitcomb rumbled through the middle, also from the 5.

In between, Trent Athmann got outside the Falcons’ containment on a 78-yard run down the far sideline that tied the game 7-7.

BOLD lost a 61-yard TD connection on an offensive pass interference penalty. Nick Kubesh kicked a short field goal to close to 13-10, but quarterback Derek Dengerud directed a clock-killing drive capped by a screen pass to Mitchel Macek a two-point conversion for a 21-10 lead at half.

Kinzler’s blocked field goal return in the third quarter was a killer, and then Falcons’ quarterback Derek Dengerud connected with Taylor Larson on a 37-yard scoring play that all but iced the game.

Kinzler and Dengerud teamed up on the 86-yard scoring plays in the fourth quarter.

ACGC plays host to Melrose on Friday while BOLD plays Minnewaska — a 31-14 winner over Morris/Chokio-Alberta — in Olivia on Friday.
