WILLMAR — For the second year in a row on Monday, the Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa and Minneota volleyball teams came into their non-conference match at Ridgewater College as two of the top teams in Class A.

And for a second straight year, the No. 3-ranked Vikings came away with a hard-fought victory in three games over the No. 6 Jaguars.

Minneota (14-1) won 25-22, 25-15 and 25-23.

Molly Hennen had 17 kills and Taylor Reiss had 16 to lead the Vikings.

BBE’s Becca Gruber finished with 13 kills and Kinlee Swanson had 12.

Hailey Braegelman had 15 set assists and Tessa Halverson had 11.

The Jaguars were playing just their second match since switching from a 5-1 rotation to a 6-2, Gruber said.

“I feel like things went well,” Gruber said. “They’re a good team but I thought we worked well together and played pretty well.”

Minneota has made nine trips to the state tournament since 2001 and placed third in Class A the last two seasons. The Vikings were 31-4 last year.

But BBE, a four-time state entrant, has several top players back from 2012’s 25-8 team that lost to Nevis in the section championship.

Monday’s match was closer than 3-0 might indicate. Games 1 and 3 both were knotted in the low 20s before the Vikings pulled them out.

Reiss and Hennen were tough to defend once the Vikings got their offense set and Reiss twice made athletic diving plays to save shots and keep points alive.

But the Jaguars (6-3) didn’t relent despite a brief letdown in Game 2.

“We know their (Minneota’s) name and we know they’re good, so we took the match in stride,” Gruber said. “They’re ranked, we’re ranked. We had nothing to lose and we put up a good fight.”
