Girls Tennis: Montevideo advances to Section 3A semifinals

REDWOOD FALLS — A sweep in singles over the span of two days propelled Montevideo into the Section 3A semifinals as the Thunder Hawks ousted West Central Conference rival Yellow Medicine East from the playoffs Thursday by earning a 5-2 win.

The match was scheduled for Wednesday, but a steady rain in Montevideo didn’t allow the match to be completed. The match was suspended with Montevideo leading 3-1 behind singles wins — all in straight setsets — from Morgan Reidinger at No. 2, Ashley Hoehne at No. 3 and Tina Lipinski at No. 4.

The remaining three matches were then played Thursday inside the Redwood Valley High School, and all three went into overtime. Kailey Maroney’s 7-6 (7-4), 6-7 (4-7), 10-6 win at No. 1 completed Montevideo’s sweep in singles.

Natasha Smith and Avery Koosmann also won at three-setter at No. 3 doubles for the Thunder Hawks, while YME’s points came in doubles from Jordan Trotter/Jordan Glad at No. 1 and Sandy Bartels/Britanna Raddatz at No. 2.

Montevideo now plays No. 2 Fairmont at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter. The other semifinal Wednesday pits No. 1 St. James and No. 4 Luverne, and the final is scheduled for noon.
