Prep football: Jaguars rally past ACGC in 4A semis

BELGRADE — Austin Kollman busted up the middle for a 12-yard touchdown late in the third quarter and the Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa defense stood strong in the fourth quarter to spill Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City 26-22 on Saturday night on the Jaguars’ home field.

Kollman, who had 1,300 yards coming in, scored with 39 ticks left in the third quarter.

The Falcons (7-3) drove into the red zone in the fourth quarter but the Jaguars stiffened. An end zone pass was broken up on fourth down and BBE took over.

Quarterback Brian Goodwin drove the Jags up field for three first downs winding down the clock. A punt on fourth down the Falcons 60 yards away from pay dirt and less than two minutes — too far in two little times for an offense based on the crashing runs of Maverick Whitcomb and Jordan Nelson, who each scored a touchdown.

After the Falcons jumped out 9-0, Tommy Cebulla ran 24 yards to score. Then, Goodwin hit Trey Heinsius in full strike for an 82-yard TD with 3:04 left in the half, which ended the Jags in front 13-9.

The Falcons’ offensive line continued to push BBE around leading to another TD march capped by Nelson busting off the left side for an 11-yard scoring run with 41 seconds left in the half and a 16-13 lead.

But before BBE headed to the locker room, Goodwin again found Heinsius behind the ACGC secondary over the middle and hooked up for a 52 yard score and a 19-16 halftime lead.

In the third quarter, ACGC regained the lead with another rushing TD at 3:28, though Goodwin broke through to block the try for point by Lucas Damm and keeping it 22-19, Falcons.

A long run by Tanner Heinsius got the Jags inside the Falcons’ 20 before Kollman took over to grind out the remaining yards.

This has been a recent but intense postseason rivalry. The Falcons ousted the Jags 15-6 in the section semifinals in 2010 and last year scored a late TD to dispatch BBE 6-0 in the Section 4A final.

The Jaguars will play for the section title against Lester Prairie/Holy Trinity on Friday at Sauk Centre.

BBE and LP/HT know one another well, facing each other in non-conference postseason openers. This year the Jaguars outfought the Bulldogs 42-29 at Belgrade.
