WILLMAR — Junior forward Shelby Schneider uncorked a hat trick in the first period as the Willmar Cardinals tumbled the Morris/Benson Storm 13-0 on Friday evening for their first win of the season.

The Cardinals (1-5) will take on the Austin Packers (3-4) at 4 p.m. Saturday at the Civic Center in the Willmar Girls Hockey Classic championship game.

Long Prairie-Grey Eagle/Wadena-Deer Creek (3-4) will play the Storm (0-3) at 2 p.m. for third place.

Also scoring for Willmar in the first frame was Jordan Sankey, Amelia Amon and Miranda Roelofs — part of an 18-shot siege on Morris/Benson Area goalkeeper Holli Christians.

MBA had only five skaters to rotate in, including a couple of seventh graders. Willmar rosters just 22 players combined varsity and jayvee but with no jayvee games in this tournament the Cardinals bench lengthened considerably.

The Cards added four more in the second. Annie Johnston, who had a pair of assists in the first period, scored in the first 20 seconds. Riley Schneider, aided by her sister Shelby, got the next marker at 12:22 and in short order Shelby scored unassisted and then again, assisted by Riley, for her fifth goal (seventh point) and a 10-0 lead after two.

Brooke Oveson, Ellissa Weiler and Kierra Miller tallied in the third.

Cardinals coach JaColby Anderson pegs the Packers game an even match-up.

“We need to be aggressive on defense and offensively move the puck, create opportunities and make the most of second and third chances in front of the net.”
