Boys Hockey: Sauk Rapids scores with 5 seconds left to beat Cardinals

SAUK RAPIDS — The Storm notched a power play goal with five seconds left in the third period to upend the Willmar Cardinals 6-5 on Tuesday in Central Lakes boys hockey.

The Cards trailed Sauk Rapids 5-4 to start the third but Evan VanDenEinde, from Buzzy Tollefson, tied it with a goal 3:17 in. It stayed that way until the final seconds with Willmar a man down after a tough call for interference with under a minute to play.

Joey Lee and Austin Smith got first period goals for a 2-1 Willmar lead. Van DenEinde and Isaac Kobenia tallied in the second period.

Card junior goalie Jacob Anderson, filling in for injured Levi Goosmann (broken thumb), stopped 19 shots in his second varsity start.

Winning goalie Will Mortenson made 18 saves facing 23 shots at the Sports Arena East.

Willmar plays St. Cloud Apollo at the MAC on Thursday and is home Saturday evening to play Park Rapids/Walker Area.
