Boys Hockey: Stars win on Thompson goal in OT

ST. CLOUD — It took three periods plus 24 seconds of the extra session for the River Lakes Stars to overturn the Lions of Providence Academy of Plymouth.

Grant Thompson beat Lions’ goalie Justin Hahnfeldt on a Stars’ powerplay carried over from the last minute of the third period for a 4-3 win over the 1-8 Lions.

River Lakes outshot PA 35-29. Nicholas Skluzacek made 29 stops for the Stars, none in the brief overtime.

Connor Beltz got the Stars’ first two goals, assisted each time by Thompson and Eric Zimmer. Beltz and Zimmer aided the game winner. Jake Jenson, from Hunter Sjoberg, scored in the third for the Stars (5-4).

Sophomore wing Zach Tarczon got all three Lion goals.

River Lakes plays Monticello today at 11:30 a.m. on the second day of the Granite City Showcase.
