Girls Hockey: Zephyrs take out Willmar

NEW HOPE — The Willmar Cardinals got off to a good start — scoring in the game’s first minute — but after that it was the Mahtomedi Zephyrs providing most of the fireworks in their 6-2 victory at the Cooper/Armstrong Robbinsdale Invite at the New Hope Sports Arena on Friday.

Miranda Roelofs notched a powerplay goal 43 seconds in for Willmar. The Schneider sisters, Riley and Shelby, set the table.

But the Zephyrs scored the next three goals before another sudden strike by the Cardinals to start the second frame — a goal by Shelby Schneider with Roelofs and Kierra Miller on the dish.

Mahtomedi outshot the Cards 46-15.

Willmar plays the last of three games Saturday.
