Gymnastics: Cards’ Thompson first on beam at CLC meet

BRAINERD — Willmar junior Stephanie Thompson won the balance beam at the Central Lakes Conference Championships on Saturday.

The Cardinals finished fourth, as they did a year ago, in both the meet and final season standings.

Thompson’s winning score on the 4-inch wide structure was 9.425.

“That was our highlight,” commented Willmar coach Jodi Mottinger. “Steph had a solid day overall placing sixth in all-around. We’re in a tough conference with St. Cloud Tech and Brainerd both ranked in the top 10 in (Class) AA and us Sartell and Alexandria in the top 10 in A. This will help us ready for section.”

Tech repeated as CLC team champion. The Tigers have held the crown every year starting with the 2004-05 season.

Tech’s Paige Beuning was all-around and floor champion. Beth Etterman of Brainerd won both vault and bars in her home gym.

Also finishing in the top 10 for the Cardinals were Thompson, Haley Mottinger and Morgan Hamstad on vault, Alexis Miley on beam, and Mottinger, Thompson and Miley on floor.

Thompson had finished seventh on beam as a sophomore.

The Cardinals are at the Section 6A Meet on Saturday at Litchfield where Melrose will be the heavy favorite. Other area teams are Benson/KMS, Morris Area, New London-Spicer and Paynesville/Eden Valley-Watkins.
