WILLMAR — Winning the top spot in singles and doubles wasn’t enough for Willmar Monday as the Cardinals were edged 4-3 by Section 2AA rival Mankato West in their delayed season opener.

The teams were scheduled to square off last Thursday, but an early spring snowstorm postponed the match a few days.

Isaac Yoakum won 6-2, 6-2 at 1-singles and the 3-doubles team of Tom Kersetter and Alex Reynolds also won in straight sets for Willmar, winning 6-4, 6-2. The Cardinals’ other point came from the 1-doubles pairing of Nick Courtney and Tate Hovland as they won 6-0, 5-7, 6-3.

“Yoakum represented strong play at Willmar’s No. 1 singles player in adverse windy conditions and Kersetter/Reynolds had strong net play,” said Willmar head coach Jim Anderson.

The Cardinals hit the courts today as well as they host Brainerd to open their Central Lakes Conference schedule. Willmar will then host Alexandria on Thursday for another CLC match.
