Boys Tennis Roundup: Tech cools off Cardinals

WILLMAR  — St. Cloud Tech senior Riley Bates led a straight-set 7-0 Central Lakes Conference sweep of the host Willmar Cardinals on Monday at the senior high courts.

The wind screens were no match for the 25 mph westerly wind on a blue-sky day following a week of postponements.

Bates is in his fourth full year at No. 1 for the conference’s dominant team. One of five seniors in the St. Cloud Tech 10-player lineup, he outhit Willmar No. 1 Isaac Yoakum 6-1, 6-0. Drew Corneil at the 2-slot fell to Wyatt Pauley 6-3, 6-2.

Willmar netters did win games at all but the 3-singles spot in a competitive effort. The Cardinals’ third-pair of Alex Reynolds/Alec Bateman took their Tech rivals to a second-set tiebreaker.

The CLC loss ended a five-match win streak and put the Cards at 2-1 in the league and 5-2 overall. Tech, which is the defending champion, is 1-0, 1-1 after an opening 5-2 loss to Wayzata. Both teams were idled all of last week by cold, snow and the Easter weekend.

The Cardinals return to the courts today to host the co-op of St. Cloud Apollo/Sauk Rapids.
