WILLMAR — The sun shone, the temperature ticked 60, the course was presentable and the west wind blew steadily at 25 mph (“Three out of four ain’t bad”) as the girls teed it up at Eagle Creek Golf Course for the Willmar Invite.

For many, including the host team, the 18-hole event was their first competitive round, after perhaps a dozen practice holes in a hard-luck spring.

Rocori played wind-dried front and back in 370 strokes to win by 19 over runner-up BOLD.

Willmar, led by third-place individual Megan Iiams, placed third at 404 with Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa fourth.

Medalist Abby Moriarty with an 85 and Marja Sorenson at 86 paced the champs. Eli Sweep of New London-Spicer had a 93 to place fifth.

Moriarty’s 38 in a cross-wind on the front easily proved the day’s best nine-hole-score, though she played in the Spartans’ third spot.

Ashley Schmitz’s sixth-place score of 94 paced BOLD, which also got a 95 from Breann Mertens and a 96 by Madison VanderHagen.

Willmar opens Central Lakes Conference play today in St. Cloud at the Wapicada Golf Course.

The Warriors begin West Central Conference play on Thursday in a boy/girl twin bill. The WCC girls start at the Granite Falls Golf Club at 11 a.m. then play nine holes at the Olivia Golf Club at 4 p.m. The boys teams play the reverse schedule. The four other WCC meets will have at the same flip-flop, two-course format.
