Baseball Playoffs: Paynesville dumps Lakers from 5AA

DELANO — The Bulldogs almost dozed off with an 8-1 when Howard Lake/Waverly-Winsted came roaring back to close to 8-7.

It took a fine play by shortstop Matthew Quade to end the seventh inning suspense. With the tying run on second and two outs, Quade chased down a high hopper up the middle to throw out the batter and preserve a one-run victory, 8-7, in the elimination bracket semifinal on Thursday.

The West No. 5 has now knocked off teams seeded 1, 3 and 4, around a 3-1 loss to Litchfield.

Paynesville was playing a third day in a row. Next for the Bulldogs (back at Delano) is the winner of The Breck School and Providence Academy.

Starter Mitch Weidner had tamed the Lakers on just a couple of hits through four innings, but the Lakers scored two in the fifth and four more in the sixth off Weidner and reliever Jordan Roos.

Trent Gertkin, Blake Karsch and Nick Dingman each had a pair of hits for the Bulldogs, now 15-7.

St. James 6

Bryce Jergenson’s no-out single in the bottom of the eighth at Legion Field drove home Joey Dufault with the tying run and Nathan Anderson with the game-ender as the Morris/Chokio-Alberta Tigers shaded St. James 7-6 on Thursday.

Jergenson, a senior, also pitched all eight innings for the win.

The Tigers needed a dramatic two-out double by Corey Storck to tie the game 4-4 in the bottom of the seventh.

St. James scored two unearned runs in the top of the eighth to go in front 6-4. In the bottom of the inning, a hit batter with the bases soaked made it 6-5, setting the stage for Jergenson’s decider.

Riley Biesterfield’s homer in the fifth was the Tigers’ first run. Morris/CA outhit St. James 10 to 6.

The win put the Tigers in the final four against host Marshall on Saturday; Luverne and Fairmont play are in the winners’ bracket final.
