WILLMAR -- Montevideo established control early and never looked back as the Thunder Hawks upended Minnesota Valley Lutheran 66-53 Thursday in the Section 3AA-North semifinals.

Minnesota Valley Lutheran (26-2) had won 17 straight to earn the No. 2 seed, but the No. 3 Thunder Hawks (19-7) found their shooting touch early to advance to Saturday's sub-section final. Montevideo will meet MACCRAY at 6 p.m. in Redwood Falls. MACCRAY (26-1) beat Montevideo 63-51 on Feb. 10 in a regular-season meeting.

Even though he was getting double-teamed, Jeff Jerve worked his way around the basket for a game-high 19 points to pace Montevideo's offensive attack. Brett Bergeson followed with 16, Ryan Boike 14 and Eric Brandon 11.

Bergeson drained five 3-pointers -- all in the first half -- and Boike netting four more shots from beyond the arc. The Thunder Hawks were 25-for-44 (57 percent) from the field.

"We got a good start from our shooters and that was helpful," said Montevideo coach Dan Douglas. "They were focusing on Jerve inside and were committing two guys on him. They switched up their defense a couple of times and we were able to make the adjustments and score."

Jerve also hooked 12 rebounds and Boike added five boards and five blocks. Brandon, who netted 24 points in Montevideo's loss to MACCRAY, grabbed nine rebounds.
