NLS holds off Osakis to win 6AA title

ST. CLOUD -- Early on, it looked like Osakis would oust another high seed during its surprising postseason run. But the experience of a Mike Dreier-led team proved to be too much for the Silverstreaks as New London-Spicer collected another section title in girls basketball by upending Osakis 34-29 Friday in the Section 6AA championship.

The Wildcats (29-1) will take a 14-game winning streak into their state quarterfinal game at Williams Arena against 8AA champion East Grand Forks (28-2) Wednesday at 6 p.m.

Osakis, who was the fourth seed from the West region, jumped out to an early 8-0 lead before the Wildcats finally got a shot to fall.

Cassie Ziemer drained a three-pointer 6:30 into the game for NLS and another trey from Taylor Thomp-sen, who led NLS with nine points, just a few seconds later got the Wildcats within three.

It will be the 14th state appearance for NLS -- the first since 2004.

The Silverstreaks would stretch their lead to 18-12, but NLS ended the first half on an 8-2 run to knot the score at 20-20 at halftime. Osakis shot 50 percent from the field in the first half but only 20 percent in the second half.

Karli Wendlandt opened the second half by netting two baskets down low to give the Wildcats their first lead. Osakis again answered to tie the game at 24-24, but the Silversteaks lost their shooting touch while NLS found just enough offense to stay in front for good.

Justine Dammermann pocketed a steal to ignite a fastbreak layup for Thompsen that gave NLS a 30-26 lead. Osakis egot within two, but Abbey Knisely banked a shot off the glass to secure the win for NLS.

"It was a total effort," said Dreier of the second half. "It was the most physical we played and it was really a war in the second half."
