Prep Golf: State meets start today for 28 area golfers

The area will have two girls teams and one boys team, along with 10 other individuals, competing in state golf tournaments starting today.

Recent perennial power and five-time girls state champion Minnewaska will have senior Ellen Stensrud, juniors Jenna Janu and Ariel Ostrander, sophomore Annika Pederson, freshman Ashlyn Guggisberg and seventh-grader Madi McGinty in Jordan for the Class AA meet at Ridges at Sand Creek. Litchfield junior Kennedy Sommerfeld will also be competing in Jordan.

Senior Liza Reinert, juniors Breann Mertens and Ashley Schmitz, sophomore Lanie Altman, and freshmen Whitney Trongard and Madison VanDerHagen helped BOLD win the girls Section 5A title and they will be at Pebble Creek Golf Club in Becker. Juniors Leah Jeseritz of Yellow Medicine East and Peyton Miller of Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa also qualified for the Class A meet.

Dawson-Boyd was the lone boys team from the area to win a section title and the Blackjacks will have senior Jared Monson, juniors Spenser Erickson, Cameron Kemem, Dalton Palmer and Easton Popma, and sophomore Christian Thoen in Becker. Yellow Medicine East senior Mitch McCosh, BOLD sophomore Ethan Weis and MACCRAY freshman Brady Madsen also qualified for the Class A meet from Section 5.

Willmar has seniors Tony Kallevig and Hunter Mottinger at the boys Class AAA meet in Coon Rapids at Bunker Hills Golf Course. Also in Becker for the boys Class AA meet will be Litchfield junior Josh Polingo and Minnewaska sophomore Brett Buckingham.

Starting tee times today are 7:30 a.m. for the girls and noon for the boys. The final round is Wednesday with the same tee times.
