Legion roundup: Madison edges Monte

GRANITE FALLS — Brandon Hill tossed a complete game and Madison scratched across two first-inning runs, beating Montevideo 2-1 on Sunday to earn a spot in the Division II, District 7 Final Four.

Austin Haas and Hill hit back-to-back doubles to lead off the game, and Dylan Lillejord pushed Haas across with an RBI groundout.

Hill would come across on a two-out error for Madison’s second run.

Monte scored on an RBI groundout in the sixth.

Hill scattered five hits and struck out one, and finished the game stranding the tying run on second.

Ricky Schmitz took a hard-luck loss, having to leave the game in the second inning with an injury.

Spencer Hildahl took over and pitched 4.2 innings of scoreless ball.

No. 2-seed Madison will face North champ Osakis 7:45 p.m. Tuesday in Montevideo.

Markus Kranz hit a two-run, walk-off single, and Jordan Thompson pitched an 11-inning complete game as No. 3-seed Montevideo edged No. 9-seed Granite Falls.

Tied 2-2 through 10 innings, Granite rallied for two in the top of the 11th on back-to-back RBI doubles from Austin Vikander and Chase Richter.

Going into the bottom half with Monte needing three runs to win, Spencer Hildahl led off with a double.

Logan Knoshal, Jeff Rohloff and Zac Enevoldsen then hit three straight singles, but Knoshal was thrown out on the bases and a lineout kept the score 4-3.

Austin Hiepler followed and got hit by a pitch to load the bases, and Kranz singled to center to score Rohloff and Enevoldsen with the tying and winning runs.

GF’s Richter suffered the tough loss, going 10.2 innings with six strikeouts and four earned runs.

Logan Sandgren fanned 19 in just seven innings, with strikeouts accounting for 19 of the 21 outs he recorded.

He did walk four and allowed a first-inning RBI double to Garrett Olson for Madison’s only hit, but was nearly perfect after that.

Besides Olson’s double, the only fair balls that Madison hit were groundouts in the second and fourth innings, as Sandgren fanned the side four times.

NLS advances to final 4

WHEATON — New London-Spicer won three games over the weekend to claim second place in the Division II, District 7 North playoffs and advance to the District 7 Final Four.

NLS improved to 9-6 after thrashing No. 2-seed Clinton 12-4 Saturday afternoon and upending No. 5 Morris 7-1 and No. 3 Brandon-Evansville 6-2 Sunday. NLS, the No. 4 seed, opens the Final Four tournament, which is hosted by Montevideo, Tuesday at 5:15 p.m. against South champion BOLD (12-3).

Jonny DeGeest tossed a complete game for NLS that featured 10 strikeouts and just one walk. A four-run third inning put DeGeest in line for the win.

Four straight singles to open the inning from Trey Austvold, Lucas Nordmeyer, Wyatt White and Ryan Vraa and an RBI single from Tyson Gislason allowed NLS to take an early 5-0 lead.

Ryan Vraa gave up only three hits while striking out six and walking only one in a complete-game victory to help keep New London-Spicer’s season alive.

Austvold (two RBI) and Nordmeyer hit run-scoring singles in the third after Brett Olson singled in a run in the first to put NLS up 4-0. Ike Goetzman added an RBI single in the fifth as NLS led 7-0 before Morris got on the board.

Joey Dufault doubled to lead off the sixth and later scored on an error for Morris’ only run.

Vraa went 4-for-4 and Goetzman added three singles to fuel a 15-hit attack for NLS. Vraa’s biggest hit came in the sixth when he slugged a three-run homer to left field, capping a second four-run frame in the game for NLS. He earlier legged out an RBI triple in the fifth.

Olson, Goetzman and Michael Arnold drove in runs during the first inning. Gislason worked all seven innings to earn the win, striking out six and scattering six hits, three earned runs and five walks.
