Prep Baseball: Paynesville wins WC South crown

PAYNESVILLE -- Paynesville won its second straight West Central South Conference baseball title with a 2-0 win over BOLD Monday.

Aaron Savelkoul of the Bulldogs (11-4, 13-6) and Jake Stevens of the Warriors (8-7, 11-7) locked up in a pitcher's duel that made hits a premium commodity. Both hurlers gave up just two hits each.

Stevens gave up two walks -- both to Paynesville's Jason Kampsen -- and both times Kampsen scored.

Kampsen took a free pass in the second inning and eventually scored on Anthony Poepping's sacrifice fly.

In the fourth, Kampsen walked again and scored on a throwing error to first base.

Savelkoul struck out 10, but walked five batters. BOLD had runners at second and third with two outs in both the second and third innings, but Paynesville's starting pitcher got out of those jams.

In the fifth, the Warriors loaded the bases and Savelkoul struck out the next batter to crush the rally.

"I think our kids really improved from the start of this season," said Paynesville coach Brad Skoglund, whose team has only been in the West Central South for two seasons. "Aaron has been really rock solid on the mound for us lately."
