RCW gets 2 upsets in 3A

RAYMOND -- After losing twice to MACCRAY in Camden North Conference games this season, Renville County West turned the tables, upsetting the top-seeded and defending Class A champion Wolverines 5-1 in the second round of the Section 3A-North baseball tournament on Saturday.

MACCRAY, which beat the Jaguars 5-2 and 7-4 during the season, finished 18-3.

RCW, seeded No. 5, blanked No. 4 Yellow Medicine East 6-0 in the first round.

RCW next meets Murray County Central in the semifinals at 5 p.m. Wednesday in Granite Falls. Canby and Adrian play at 7 p.m. in the other semifinal.

Ben Trochlil spun a six-hitter in going the distance for the win. He walked three and struck out six.

Renville County West's No. 8 and No. 9 hitters, Ryan Fransen and Steve Jakel, combined to go 5-for-6 with a home run and four RBI. Fransen finished 3-for-3 with two RBI, while Jakel was 2-for-3, including a two-run homer in RCW's three-run sixth inning.

In the the sixth, Brian Feldman was hit by a pitch and was sacrificed to second before Trochlil walked. Fransen then singled in Feldman ahead of Jakel's first career home run.

Dakota Freiborg went 2-for-3 for he Jaguars. Nate Wensauer also drove in a run.

Brandon Madsen and Jamie Boonstra each went 2-for-3 for MACCRAY.
