Prep Softball: Pipestone tops Redwood in Section 3AA final, 7-0

MARSHALL -- By winning its 17th straight game Thursday, Pipestone advanced to the Class AA State Softball Tournament as the Arrows blanked Redwood Valley 7-0 in the Section 3AA championship.

Bailey Bouman didn't let Redwood Valley, who had won 14 of its last 15 games, find a groove as the senior pitcher struck out 13 and gave up just two hits without issuing a walk.

Four of the Cardinals' five losses this year were to the Arrows, two during the regular season in Southwest Conference play and two in the postseason.

The Arrows (21-1) will meet the Section 7 champions in the first round of the state tournament next Thursday in North Mankato. It's the fifth straight year that Pipestone has qualified for the state tournament. The Cardinals (21-5) were looking to make the state softball tournament for the first time in school history.

Sam Felt got off to a strong start in the pitcher's circle for Redwood Valley, but the Arrows got to her in the third by plating three runs, all with two outs. Jesse Gergen, who was 3-for-4, supplied the big hit with a two-run single.

Pipestone scored three more times in the sixth, again with two outs, as two Redwood Valley errors led to three unearned runs for the Arrows. A pinch-hit RBI triple from Peyten Petersen in the seventh capped the scoring.

Ashley Bunting bunted for a single in the first and Steph Jensen singled in the fourth to account for the Cardinals' two hits. Bouman retired the last 11 batters in order as Redwood Valley had only three baserunners for the game.
