Albany Early Bird Invite

The New London-Spicer volleyball team placed third at the Albany Early Bird Invitational on Friday at Albany High School.

NLS won three of four matches and defeated Rocori 2-0 in the third-place match.

The Wildcats also defeated Albany and Watertown-Mayer by 2-0 scores but fell in three sets to Sauk Rapids after losing junior outside hitter Lindsey Vagle after winning the first set.

“Without Lindsay’s spark, we struggled to pull our mental game together for set two and three,” said Wildcats head coach Gina Macik. “However, we rallied back in the next two matches with wins against Watertown-Mayer and a very good Rocori team.”

Sydney Stone, a Class AA All-State Honorable Mention in 2013, led the Wildcats with 48 kills and only eight hitting errors in 97 attacks. She also served 6 aces and had a team-high 25 digs.

Kabrie Weber had 23 kills and seven errors in 56 attacks and she led the team with 6 blocks. Erin Tebben had 16 kills and 4 blocks, and Megan Thorson had 9 kills and 4 blocks.

Espi Austvold had 78 set assists and just six errors in 213 sets, and Carley Cronen was strong all-around, with 7 service aces, 6 assists, 33 of 37 serve receives and 24 digs.

The 3-1 Wildcats plays Gibbon-Fairfax-Withrop on Thursday in New London.
