Minnewaska avenges loss to Breckenridge

MORRIS -- Eight days earlier, Minnewaska was upset by Breckenridge in the regular-season finale by 15 points.

This time, with more on the line, the Lakers (25-4) bolted to a 9-0 lead and never trailed en route to a 65-45 triumph over the Cowboys (12-14) in the Section 6AA-West semifinals Saturday at UM-Morris.

Brady Johnsrud scored 16 of his team-high 18 points in the second half for Minnewaska. Shane Bosek had 10 of his 16 points in the first half. Both players pulled down nine rebounds.

Minnewaska now faces Long Prairie-Grey Eagle at 6 p.m. Tuesday back at Morris.

"I think that good start made a big difference," said Minnewaska coach Phil Johnsrud. "We didn't play particularly well against them the last time we met and they were at their best. To come up and get a big lead right away really boosted the kids' confidence and really fired them up."

Breckenridge closed within 36-30, outscoring the Lakers 12-8 to start the second half, but that was as close as the Cowboys would get as Minnewaska went on a 13-4 run to blow the game open.

"We were a little more familiar with Breckenridge this around," said coach Johnsrud. "And we had a great week of practice."

Ben Peters and Trenton Berg added nine points apiece for the Lakers. Andrew Ostrander chipped in with seven.

Ryan Voss led Breckenridge with 17 points. Nic Conzemius had eight points and 10 rebounds.

Neither team shot well from the outside, each sinking just 1-of-9 shots from three-point range.
