Prep Baseball: LQPV, Morris/CA each win twice in 3AA-North final

MARSHALL -- Lac qui Parle Valley and Morris/Chokio-Alberta both went 2-0 in the Section 3A-A-North baseball tournament Saturday to advance to the semifinals Thurday in Marshall.

Lac qui Parle Valley got back-to-back shutouts by Joey Schreck and Brandon Bornhorst to beat Red Rock Central/Westbrook-Walnut Grove 10-0 and then Marshall 5-0.

The win over Marshall avenged an earlier 1-0 loss to the Tigers in the regular season.

Morris/Chokio-Alberta topped Montevideo 9-6 and then Redwood valley 4-1.

Morris/CA (20-2) will face New Ulm at 5 p.m. Thursday, while LQPV (16-5) will face Fairmont at 7 p.m. The championship will be June 9 in Marshall.

First round LQPV 10, RRC/WWG 0

Schreck allowed only three hits in going the distance for the win. He walked three and struck out four.

San Haas went 3-for-3, including a triple, and drove in a run for the Eagles.

LQPV scored three times in the first inning, including consecutive run-scoring singles by Seth Haas and Brandon Weber. And they tacked on three more runs in the third with Sam Haas and Eric Paulson hitting back-to-back RBI singles.

Morris 9, Montevideo 6

Both teams had 12 hits, but Montevideo had four errors that led to three unearned runs.

The Thunder Hawks (5-15) led 5-4 on a steal of home by Brett Bergeson before Morris/CA took the lead for good with a pair of runs in the last of the fourth on a run-scoring double by Tyler Hansen and a sacrifice fly by Ryan Beyer. The Tigers padded their lead with two more in the sixth when Beyer hit a two-out single, stole second and scored on an error. Riley then singled and came around to score on an error.

Riley allowed only one hit and one run over the final 31/3 innings for the win. He walked none and struck out three.

Cole Riley went 3-for-4 and drove in two runs for the Tigers. Alex Erickson went 2-for-4.

Kyle TeBeest went 3-for-4 for the Thunder Hawks. Brett Bergeson had two hits and drove in two runs for Montevideo. Joe Bednar and Tanner Lindeman also had two hits apiece.

Marshall 7, Benson 3

Cody Jaeger slugged a two-run homer in the second inning to get Benson (4-13) within one, but Marshall plated the eventually wining run in the bottom half of the frame. Nathan Wiedner hit a three-run homer in first inning for the Tigers.

Luke Schwarz tripled to lead off the second for Benson (4-13). Both Jaeger and Schwarz had two hits to account for half of Benson's eight hits.

Redwood Valley 5, BOLD 4

Redwood Valley tied the game in the seventh on a groundout and later scored the winning run in the frame on an error.

BOLD (9-10) scored all of its runs in the first two innings behind two sacrifice flies from Jake Marcus and Drew Diekman in the first and an RBI single from Tate Neubauer and an RBI groundout from Zach Remillard in the second.

Eric Riley spun a three-hitter and also hit a solo home run in the second inning to spark the Tigers.

Mitch Kill went 2-for-2 and knocked in a run.

Riley walked two and struck out two.

Leading 2-1, the Tigers tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the sixth on a wild pitch and Kill's run-scoring single.
