VFW Baseball: Willmar slips past Montevideo

SPICER -- In a rain make-up played at Green Lake Diamond, the Willmar VFW prevailed 5-4 over Montevideo decided in a wild seventh inning Tuesday.

Montevideo trailed 4-1 through the sixth. Willmar starter Josh Warne was working on a three-hitter, but Spencer Hildahl, the Montevideo pitcher, and Zac Envoldson led off with back-to-back doubles for one run and two Willmar errors contributed to another run before Markus Kranz hit an RBI single to tie it at 4-all.

Tony McCleary led off the Willmar seventh with his fourth hit of the game, a double. Willmar catcher Buzzy Tollefson, the No. 2 hitter, smashed a Hindahl pitch down the line for a double to score McCleary with the game-ending run.

McCleary and Tollefson doubled twice and Adam Nibaur added another two-bagger for Willmar.

Hildahl gave up eight hits over six innings and walked just one.

Willmar plays two games on Friday, at Spicer against New London-Spicer at 4:30 p.m. and at Orange Field in Willmar at 7 p.m. against Starbuck.
